Course Overview
The 5-hour pre-licensing course is a New York State requirement for every new driver. You must complete this course before you can schedule your road test for a NY driver's license. Our class is fully approved by the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles (NYS DMV) and held online through a live Zoom session.
NYS DMV-approved live class
The 5 hour pre-licensing course is a New York State requirement for every new driver. You must complete this course before you can schedule your road test for a NY driver's license. Our class is fully approved by the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles (NYS DMV) and held online through a live Zoom session — you join from home, no need to travel to a classroom in Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, or Bronx.
Certified instructor, real-time Q&A
A certified instructor leads the entire 5 hour class online, walks you through New York traffic laws, defensive driving techniques, and the rules of the road, and answers any questions you have in real time. The format is fully interactive — students can ask questions throughout the session, get clarification on tricky DMV rules, and benefit from real-world examples specific to driving in New York City and across NY State.
No quizzes, no module tests, no final exam
There are no quizzes, no module tests, and no final exam. Attend the full class, and you receive your MV-278 pre-licensing certificate. The NY DMV does not require students to pass any test for the 5-hour course — only to complete the full 5 hours of live instruction. We keep the focus on understanding the material and being prepared for your road test, not on memorizing for a quiz.
MV-278 certificate, mailed nationwide
We work with permit holders across New York State and ship MV-278 certificates anywhere in the US. Pickup at our Brooklyn office is also available. You'll get a digital confirmation the same day, with expedited USPS shipping if you need your certificate faster. Your MV-278 pre-licensing certificate is valid for one full year from the date of issue, and you must schedule your NY road test before it expires.
What Makes Our 5 Hour Class Different
Live, Interactive Class
Real Zoom classroom with a real instructor. Ask questions, join the discussion, get answers for your specific situation. Not a recorded program where you click through slides alone.
No Tests, No Quizzes, No Final Exam
Just attend the full session. The DMV requires attendance, not a passing grade — so we keep it simple. No module quizzes, no 70%-to-pass threshold.
Physical MV-278 Certificate Mailed
A real paper certificate in hand — mailed to any US address or picked up at our Brooklyn office. Valid for one full year from the date of issue.
Available for Ages 16+
Including Junior driver license (Class DJ) and Junior motorcycle license (Class MJ) holders. Our live Zoom format meets DMV requirements for all permit holders regardless of age.
English & Spanish Weekly
Live Spanish-language sessions every Sunday at 3 PM with a bilingual instructor. Office staff also speak Russian, Ukrainian, and Turkish.
Who Needs the 5 Hour Pre-Licensing Course?
Under New York State law, every new driver must complete the 5 hour pre-licensing course before scheduling their first road test. This applies whether you are 16 or 60 — the course is required to obtain your first NY driver's license.
You need this course if you are:
- A first-time driver in New York State with a valid learner permit, regardless of age
- Age 16 or 17, working toward a Junior driver license (Class DJ) or Junior motorcycle license (Class MJ) — live class is required for your age group
- An adult new driver preparing for your first New York driver license
- A returning driver whose NY license expired more than one year ago
- A driver with a revoked license who needs to re-qualify for the road
- A new resident of New York with a license from another country who wants to convert to a NY license
What You'll Learn — Course Curriculum
Our 5 hour pre-licensing class online follows the official NYS DMV curriculum and covers everything new drivers need to know before getting behind the wheel. The course is structured around the same nine learning topics required by New York State:
Introduction to Safe Driving
The mindset, responsibilities, and habits of a licensed driver in NY.
Driving Within the Highway Transportation System
How drivers, vehicles, roads, and traffic environments interact, and how to navigate them safely.
Rules of the Road
New York State traffic laws, right-of-way rules, signs, signals, and pavement markings every driver must know.
Safe Driving Habits
Building defensive driving skills, scanning for hazards, maintaining safe following distance, and managing speed.
Safe Driving Skills
Practical techniques for collision avoidance, lane changes, intersections, and adverse weather conditions.
Risks of Alcohol and Other Drugs
How alcohol, prescription medications, and recreational drugs affect reaction time, judgment, and your legal standing under New York's DWI/DWAI laws.
New York State Vehicle and Traffic Law
Key sections of the NY Vehicle and Traffic Law every driver must follow — penalties, license points, and consequences for violations.
Feelings, Attitudes, and Risk Taking
How emotions, peer pressure, and personal attitudes influence driving decisions, especially for new and teen drivers.
Aggressive Driving and Road Rage
Recognizing aggressive behavior on the road, managing your own reactions, and de-escalating risky situations.
Road Test Tips Included
Beyond the standard NYS DMV curriculum, our instructors share practical insights from years of preparing students for the road test at New York City test sites. During the class, you'll learn what examiners actually look for, the most common mistakes that cause new drivers to fail, and how to handle parallel parking, three-point turns, and intersection navigation under test conditions. This is local, hands-on knowledge you won't find in a generic state-wide program.

Required Documents
To take the 5 hour pre-licensing class, you must have a valid New York State learner permit. Two options work:
Plastic Photo Learner Permit Card
If you already received your plastic photo permit card from the DMV, that's all you need. Have it visible during the Zoom class so the instructor can verify your identity.
Paper Permit + NY State Photo ID
If your plastic card hasn't arrived yet (DMV usually mails it within 2 weeks of passing the permit test), you can attend with your paper learner permit plus a New York State photo ID.
Accepted forms of NY State ID:
- NY State ID card
- Expired NY driver's license
- Expired NY learner permit
Not accepted by the NYS DMV for course identification:
- Interim Permit (the paper receipt you receive at the DMV counter)
- US Passport
- Green Card or other federal ID
- Out-of-state driver's license alone
You'll also need a device with camera and microphone (laptop, tablet, or smartphone), reliable internet, and a quiet space free from distractions for the duration of the class.
Frequently Asked Questions
When will I receive the Zoom link?
Within one hour of completing your registration and payment, you'll get an email with the Zoom link, login details, and class instructions.
Can I take the course on my phone?
Yes. The course works on any modern smartphone, tablet, laptop, or desktop with a working camera, microphone, and stable internet connection. We do recommend a larger screen if possible — you'll be following along for 5 hours.
Do I have to complete the whole 5 hours in one sitting?
Yes. New York DMV requires the live class to be taken from start to finish in a single session. Plan to be uninterrupted during class time.
Is there a final exam or any test?
No. There are no quizzes, no module tests, and no final exam. The DMV requires attendance, not a passing grade.
How long is the MV-278 certificate valid?
One year from the date of issue. You must schedule your road test within that year (the road test itself can occur after the expiration, if your appointment was booked in time).
I lost my certificate — can you replace it?
Yes. If you originally took the course with us and your certificate hasn't expired, we'll mail you a duplicate for $25.
Can a 16 or 17 year old take this course?
Yes. Our live Zoom format meets DMV requirements for all permit holders ages 16 and up, including those working toward a Junior driver license (Class DJ) or Junior motorcycle license (Class MJ).
Is the 5 hour course the same as Driver Education (MV-285)?
No. Driver Education (MV-285) is a separate program offered through high schools and colleges. The 5 hour pre-licensing course (MV-278) is a state requirement for all new drivers and is what you need to schedule your road test.
Is this the same as Defensive Driving / PIRP?
No. The Defensive Driving Course (also called PIRP or IPIRP) is a 6-hour course for licensed drivers who want to reduce points on their record or get an insurance discount. It does not qualify you for a road test. The 5 hour pre-licensing course is the one you need for your first NY driver's license.
Do I need to take the 5 hour course before driving lessons?
Not necessarily, but we strongly recommend it. The course teaches foundational knowledge that makes your behind-the-wheel lessons more productive. Many students take the course first, then book driving lessons.
Can I cancel or reschedule?
Yes. Contact us at least 24 hours before your scheduled class to reschedule at no extra cost. Same-day cancellations may forfeit the fee — please plan ahead.
Happy faces of our clients.
