What the 5 Hour Driving Course Is

The 5 hour driving course is New York's standardized pre-licensing class, which new drivers complete before taking a DMV road test. It lasts about five hours, follows one curriculum set by the DMV, and ends with the Pre-Licensing Course Completion Certificate, form MV-278. You may also see it called the 5 hour pre-licensing course or the five hour class. It is the same requirement.

The class is classroom theory only. It does not put you behind the wheel or rehearse the road test, which is what driving lessons are for.

Who Has to Take the 5 Hour Class in New York

New drivers in New York have to take the 5 hour class before the road test, at any age, unless one of the exceptions below applies. You need a valid NYS learner permit before the class starts, and you must be at least 16.

Two groups can skip it:

Students who finished the 48-hour Driver Education Program through a high school or college and hold the MV-285 certificate
Drivers with a valid New York State license who are changing to another license class

The class is also required if you:

Hold a driver license from another country (other than Canada) and are applying for a New York license
Let your New York license expire 2 or more years ago and have to apply for a new one

Drivers moving from another US state or a Canadian province can usually exchange a valid license at the DMV without taking the class.

CoreWay teaches the live Zoom format, which the DMV calls distance learning or virtual classroom. It is open to 16 and 17 year olds, unlike the self-paced online course, and you still walk away with a paper MV-278.

How the Live Zoom 5 Hour Class Works

The class is one live session of about five hours with a certified instructor, short videos, and open discussion. You can ask questions at any point. There are no quizzes and no final exam.

To get credit, you need:

A phone, tablet, or computer with a camera and a stable internet connection
A quiet place where you can stay for the whole session, not a car or a workplace
Your learner permit in hand, since the instructor checks it on camera
To be present from start to finish, because partial attendance does not earn a certificate

The 5 hour class costs $40 at CoreWay. That covers the full live session and your MV-278 certificate. We take all major credit and debit cards.

If you also need a road test appointment and a car for test day, a package with the 5 hour class covers everything in one payment. Packages with 3 or more lessons cost 5-10% less than buying each service separately.

Need a different date? Cancel or reschedule at least 24 hours before your class. Later changes are not refunded, and under DMV rules a student who joins late cannot take part in the session.

Documents Required for the 5 Hour Course

You need one of two things to take the 5 hour course.

Plastic photo learner permit

The card alone is enough.

Paper learner permit plus a New York State photo ID

Use this if your plastic card has not arrived yet, which takes about two weeks. A NYS ID card, an expired driver license, or an expired learner permit all count.

The interim permit by itself is not accepted. Neither is a US passport or a Green Card: for this course you need New York State identification.

MV-278 Certificate Pickup and Mail Delivery

You can get your MV-278 certificate two ways after class:

Office pickup. Collect it at 590B New York Ave, Brooklyn, NY 11203. We email you when it is ready.
Mail. We ship to any US address. Standard delivery takes one to two weeks, and expedited USPS shipping is available if your road test is close.

You also get a digital confirmation the same day.

MV-278 Certificate Validity

The MV-278 certificate is valid for one year from the issue date. It has to be valid on the day you make your road test appointment. Bring the original to the test, because the license examiner keeps it. If it expires before you make your road test appointment, you have to retake the course.

Lost Certificate Replacement

If you took the class with us and lost your certificate, we issue a duplicate for $25 as long as the original has not expired. Contact the office with your name and class date.
