The Seaview road test site is in Canarsie, where Seaview Avenue runs along Canarsie Park. Cars line up on the park side just before East 104th Street, and tests usually stay on nearby residential blocks: a wide divided avenue, short one-way streets, the end of Seaview at East 108th Street and, on some routes, all-way stops. Here is how test day works and how we prepare you without ever practicing on the test streets.
How the road test works at Seaview
Finding the line
The DMV lists the site as Seaview Ave & E 104th St, facing E 104th St. Test cars wait in the parking lane on the south (park) side of the eastbound roadway, from just past E 102nd up to E 104th, under NYC DOT signs that read NYS ROAD TEST ONLY, MONDAY–FRIDAY 8AM–5PM. Because the line faces E 104th, approach heading east on Seaview, for example from Rockaway Parkway, and slow down through the P.S. 272 school zone between E 99th and E 102nd.
Check-in at the car
Reach Seaview up to 15 minutes before your slot; a late candidate may not be tested. Weather or road work can cancel or move a test, so check the DMV closings and cancellations page before heading to Canarsie. In our car, your instructor meets you about 10–15 minutes ahead, at a Coreway office or right at the Seaview site.
You typically wait in the car until the examiner reaches you, checks your papers and photographs you, your documents and the car. Bring the photo learner permit card itself, the original MV-278 (no copies; skip it after the online course or with an MV-285 on file), the MV-262 for applicants under 18, and any corrective lenses your permit lists. Your accompanying driver must carry a physical license. In our Corolla that driver is your instructor, and no one else rides along. Our Brooklyn road test guide lists every document and car requirement.
Behind the wheel, then your result
With the examiner in the front passenger seat giving directions, you signal, leave the curb for the right-hand lane of the two-lane eastbound roadway, and hold that lane until told otherwise. Expect roughly 10–20 minutes of driving, plus time in line. Recording the test is not allowed, so any dash cam stays off. Results show up online after 6 p.m. that evening (how to check yours). A pass makes an interim license available online; after a fail, your permit stays valid until its expiration date and you may retest after 14 days or more.
The streets of the Seaview test area
Route choice is the examiner's on the day, so use this table as a map of likely streets, not a fixed course. Seaview tests typically stay in the blocks between E 102nd and E 108th Streets, from Seaview north to about Flatlands 7th Street, one block short of Avenue M, and finish by coming down E 103rd, 104th or 105th to a STOP sign at Seaview.
| Street | Layout | Examiner's focus |
|---|---|---|
| Seaview Ave, E 102nd to E 108th | Two one-way roadways split by a raised median with an opening at each cross street; two lanes eastbound; a traffic light at E 102nd, none from E 103rd to E 108th. The park and a bike path on the south side, B17 buses. | Your pull-out, lane choice, speed, and people crossing to the park. |
| Seaview at E 108th | Eastbound Seaview has a STOP sign at E 108th. The left lane is left-turn only; the right lane continues straight into a short dead-end loop. | A full stop, the correct lane and a clean left onto E 108th. |
| E 105th St | Two-way, with parked cars that block the view. | The left into it through the median, and a possible pull-over soon after. |
| E 104th St | One-way toward Seaview. | That you don't try to turn into it from the line. |
| E 103rd St | Two-way residential street. | The left from its STOP sign across the median. |
| E 108th St | Two-way, one lane each way; side streets stop for it. Speed humps north of Avenue N, dead ends to the east. | Speed over the humps and reading signs before each turn. |
| Flatlands 7th to 10th Sts | Short one-way blocks that alternate direction, each ending at a STOP sign. | The one-way arrow before you turn in. |
| Avenue N | Two-way, with all-way stops at E 103rd and E 105th. | All-way right of way and early braking. |
Required maneuvers and where they come up
The DMV says that on the test you will need to show at least three left and three right turns, a parallel park, a three-point turn, and both an intersection controlled by a sign or signal and one without. Mistakes go on the score sheet under five headings: leaving the curb; turning and intersections; parking, backing and U-turns; driving in traffic; and vehicle control. At Seaview:
- Leaving the curb. You merge into a two-lane one-way roadway: signal, check the mirror, then look over your left shoulder across both lanes.
- Left turns. E 104th is one-way toward you, so the first possible left is E 105th. Turn into the median opening, stop before the westbound lanes and yield to their traffic, which parked cars can hide. At E 108th, turn left from the left-only lane after a full stop.
- The left onto Seaview. At the STOP sign on E 103rd, 104th or 105th, stop, creep forward and check left, cross straight to the median, check right, turn into the left lane of the far roadway, then signal and move right. This turn trips up more candidates here than any other.
- Right turns. Often from a STOP sign, for example back onto westbound Seaview: stop at the line, not in the crosswalk, creep until you can see, and turn tight.
- Intersections. STOP signs give you controlled intersections. Where only the cross street has a STOP sign, as on Seaview at E 103rd, 104th and 105th or along E 108th, you have no sign of your own: hold a steady pace, scan both ways and be ready to stop for pedestrians.
- Parallel parking. It is part of every road test and can come at any point; at Seaview you may be told to pull over soon after the left onto E 105th. Finish with your wheels within one foot of the curb and stay 15 feet from hydrants.
- Three-point turn. It needs a two-way street, so expect it on one like E 103rd, E 105th or Avenue N, never on one-way E 104th or the Flatlands blocks.
- Vehicle control. Know where the wipers, defroster, lights and window switches are; unfamiliarity with the controls is scored.
Signs and signals around the Seaview site
| Sign | Where | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| STOP | Side streets at Seaview; eastbound Seaview at E 108th; the Flatlands blocks | Full stop at the stop line (or before the crosswalk), then creep forward. |
| STOP with ALL WAY plaque | Avenues N and M at E 103rd and E 105th, with STOP AHEAD warnings on Avenue N | First to stop goes first; if you arrive together, yield to the car on your right. |
| ONE WAY | E 104th (toward Seaview), E 102nd north of Seaview (away from it), and the Flatlands blocks, which alternate | Check the arrow before every turn. |
| DO NOT ENTER | Flatlands 8th St at E 108th | Never turn in. |
| Lane arrows painted on the pavement | Eastbound Seaview at E 108th | Pick your lane before the STOP line; examiners here often don't say "turn left". |
| CITY SPEED LIMIT 25, PHOTO ENFORCED | Seaview, E 108th, E 103rd, Avenue N | 25 mph is a ceiling, but driving too slowly is also scored. |
| SPEED BUMP, 15 MPH plate | E 108th, Avenue N to Flatlands 6th | Slow to about 15 mph before each hump. |
City rules hold here too: no turning on red unless a sign permits it; at a crosswalk with no working signal, wait until the pedestrian is across; people may legally cross mid-block along the park; and a school bus flashing red lights stops you even from the far side of Seaview's median.
Where candidates slip up at Seaview
- A mirror-only pull-out with no shoulder check.
- Looking for a left at E 104th, a one-way street that runs toward you.
- Taking the left onto Seaview in one sweep instead of checking again from the median.
- On the left onto Seaview, turning into the near (westbound) roadway, against traffic.
- Swinging a U-turn around the median end at E 108th instead of turning left onto E 108th St. No sign bans that U-turn, but it is not the turn examiners expect.
- Rolling stops, or going out of turn at the all-way stops on Avenue N.
How Coreway prepares you for the Seaview road test
We build Seaview preparation around this site's moves, practiced on comparable streets outside the test area:
- Drills: the two-stage median left from a STOP sign, lane arrows without a spoken cue, all-way stops, one-way and DO NOT ENTER streets, passing buses and double-parked vans, and speed humps.
- Parking and turning: parallel parking and three-point turns on narrow two-way streets.
- A practice run of the test on your lessons, checked against the examiner's five areas.
- A test-day plan: we meet you 10–15 minutes early and join the line on eastbound Seaview, facing E 104th.
- A document check, including an original MV-278 within its one-year validity. Need one? Take our 5-hour course in Brooklyn.
- A DMV-compliant car: our Toyota Corolla is registered, insured, inspected and clean, with working seat belts. Book a car for your Brooklyn road test.
- A warm-up in the same car: with the lesson-plus-car option, a 45-minute lesson right before the test, on streets outside the test area.
Want more practice first? Book driving lessons or a lesson package. No test date yet? We can book a standard or rush road test appointment.
No practice in the Seaview test area
Practicing on the Seaview test streets is not allowed, and we never do it. Under 15 NYCRR §4.1, a learner-permit holder may drive in a designated road test area only for the road test itself; §76.16(c) forbids driving instructors to give any lesson inside one; and the DMV itself says practice driving is not allowed at state test sites. That is why our lessons never use the blocks around the Seaview line or the Starrett City site just over a mile north. We rehearse every maneuver on look-alike streets elsewhere and bring you to Seaview on test day.
Frequently Asked Questions
-
Where is the Seaview line-up, exactly?
In the parking lane on the park (south) side of Seaview Avenue's eastbound roadway, from just past E 102nd to E 104th, with cars facing E 104th. NYS ROAD TEST ONLY signs mark the spot; arrive heading east on Seaview to join the line.
-
Which streets will I drive on at Seaview?
The examiner chooses on the day. Seaview tests typically use the avenue between E 102nd and E 108th, E 103rd, 104th, 105th and 108th Streets, the Flatlands 7th to 10th Streets, and Avenue N.
-
What are the trickiest moments at Seaview?
The left from a STOP sign across the median onto eastbound Seaview, landing in the left lane of the far roadway, and the STOP at E 108th, where the lane arrows decide your turn and "left" means onto E 108th.
-
Can I practice around the Seaview site before test day?
No. Under 15 NYCRR §4.1, permit holders may drive in a road test area only to take a road test, and under §76.16(c) instructors may not teach there. We build the same skills with you on similar streets away from the site.
-
Can I take the Seaview road test in Coreway's car?
Yes. You test in our Toyota Corolla, which meets DMV requirements, and the instructor who meets you beforehand is your licensed accompanying driver. Book a car for the road test.
